The Chess Boy

The story of a young boy who is raised in a buddhist temple and taught to play Go.

Storyline

In the final years of the Ming Dynasty (around 1640), Japanese pirates are pillaging the areas south of the Yangtze river. The main character, Jiang Liuer, is placed in a buddhist temple by his parents where he learns to play Go from three monks. They discover that Jiang Liuer is a natural talent at Go. One day, Jiang Liuer’s parents are killed by pirates and the monks urge him to persue his Go future and travel the land to learn from the masters.
